On Saturday September 10th, we organized a charity event to create "Little Chef Care and Share" care packages and collect donations for the children affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Over 80 kids showed up with their parents and we baked over 110 pounds of granola bars and raised $1522. We packed the granola bars into 125 care packages filled with cards created by our Little Chefs. The cards even had photos of our Little Chefs in actions! We shipped the care packages to the Douglass Elementary school in Houston. The school was re-opened just for Katrina-affected children.

Below, you will see the photos of everyone hard at work. Towards the end, you will see the Douglass Elementary school's children receiving the care packages. Here are email excerpts from the principal and staff of Douglass Elementary.

"My goodness--I cannot tell you how much the students loved the cookies---and they were really thrilled to get the notes and photographs! I'm sure some of them had never had any correspondence of their very own. Their eyes lit up when they saw that there were notes in the packages. What a wonderful gesture on the part of you and your "Little Chefs". They shared their cookies (which were yummy) with their teachers and the staff, so we all got to enjoy your efforts. Thank you so much from me and the kids."

"I was present when your box of goodies arrived. Were we ever excited! I was also in each room as the children received your gifts. They were so excited almost overwhelmed. It was obvious that the granola bars were delicious but the letters and photos captured their hearts. I must say it brought more than a tear to my eyes. I realize what an undertaking and expense making and sending granola bars to kids thousands of miles away is... but you must know that it was deeply appreciated."
